About

The Foundation’s Legacy and Ongoing Impact

The Métis Legal Research and Education Foundation was established in 2001 to continue the work begun by Senator Louis Morin of Turnor Lake; President Philip Chartier of the Buffalo Narrows Local which administered the Métis Rights Defence Fund; and Clément Chartier Buffalo Narrows Local member and lawyer. The Foundation also has a voluntary board made up of Métis citizens from northwest Saskatchewan. This work included defending Métis citizens charged with hunting or fishing offences, initially in northwest Saskatchewan and also in the rest of Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba.

Empowering Métis Communities

As a registered non-profit organization, the Métis Legal Research and Education Foundation is committed to serving the needs of Métis communities. Our non-profit status enables us to allocate resources and efforts towards our core mission of advancing Métis rights, education, and well-being. With a focus on making a meaningful impact, we are dedicated to creating positive change and fostering a brighter future for Métis citizens.
